“A smooth and black monster, big snake-bodied and horse-headed. It’s the awful vision that could appear to anyone looking from Punta della Dogana. According to the legend, a dreadful creature, similar to a huge sea snake, hides in a hollow beneath this place, surely one of the most panoramic and evocative locations in Venice.
The black water monster, so it is known, is said to appear very rarely only in full moon nights, when the wind ripples water and makes moving forms indistinguishable… The name “black waters’ monster” seems to come from its preference to come out when the basin water is very dark with no moonshine.”

The birth
The lagoon monster is a magical creature based on venetian legend which has taken concrete form through the combined action of positive and pro-active forces: architects, designers, craft workers and master glassmakers have all become involved in an extraordinary venture, in a search for a new form of expression to create communication and interaction between two ancient, opposite materials: water and glass. The Result is a marine creature whose form and essence are inspired by its place of origin – the Venice Lagoon – as depicted in his book by Alberto Toso Fei, a traveller, journalist and expert on Venetian history.
Designed by Architect Simona Marta Favrin, made of a stainless steel skeleton and it be coated by a skin of Murano glass scales created by the Glassmaker Nicola Moretti, with the supervision of Gianluca Orazio.
The lagoon monster is a magic creature, exhibited in its natural environment, namely water.
It is exhibited in its natural setting: water.
It’s 6,5 m long and 115 cm large, with a maximum height by 110 cm, immersed in a pool. A complex and Innovative technological system supported by automation, designed and developed by Forme d’Acqua, water and white LEDs lighting at different temperatures, make the creature alive and pulsating.
Featuring an exclusive technological soul that lives through a pulsing heart and breathing in water, the lagoon monster live its own life, hanging halfway between earth, air and sea.
The lagoon monster has a stainless steel skeleton moulded patiently by skilled smiths and be covered with a skin of Murano glass scales made by the master Nicola Moretti using the ancient “Vetro Murrino” technique, which he has expertly and proficiently reworked and brought up to date.
