Dynamic Floor Fountain
WaltherPark, Bolzano

Description
WaltherPark is an ambitious urban redevelopment project located in the immediate vicinity of Bolzano's train station. The project was born to restore a 15,000 m² area in the city that had long been neglected and underdeveloped. Aiming to expand the city centre and create new meeting spaces, WaltherPark represents a new urban centre designed to be enjoyed by everyone: residents, visitors, and families.
The project bears the signature of star architect David Chipperfield (winner of the 2023 Pritzker Prize), who created a concept focused on a multifunctional neighbourhood: homes, offices, a gallery with over 80 shops, a four-star hotel, and green spaces, all connected to the station and the historic centre.
The project also included the redevelopment of the green area in front of the complex, designed as a space for relaxation and leisure. In this park, Forme d'Acqua created a large dynamic floor fountain with 44 nozzles. The nozzles are arranged in four parallel rows of 11 jets each, covering an area of 110 m2. Each nozzle is equipped with an independent pump, a design for precise and independent control of the individual water jets. This configuration ensures highly dynamic aquatic compositions, enabling the creation of complex choreographies synchronised with the lighting displays. The independent movement of each jet also allows for considerable operational flexibility, optimising the visual effect and the system's real-time response, even in variable environmental conditions.
The fountain always uses the same water thanks to a filtration and recirculation system, thus avoiding unnecessary water waste. The system draws water from the boxes, filters it, automatically adjusts its pH and Redox values, and recirculates it clean and safe. This protects both the mechanical parts and the health of those who come into contact with it. Before any discharge, a dechlorination system removes residual chlorine, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and protection. Furthermore, thanks to an anemometer, the height of the jets is automatically adjusted based on the wind, optimising consumption and comfort.
Strabag S.p.A., the winning contractor, commissioned Forme d'Acqua, with Studio Ingena overseeing the project. The design and construction of the fountain's MEP components and the programming of five water-and-light displays were commissioned.
WaltherPark represents a strategic project for the city: a new neighbourhood in the heart of Bolzano designed to bring together people, nature, and urban life in an open, sustainable, and inclusive way.
