If you do not have plans for this weekend, come to Venice and do not miss The Venice Glass Week, the first edition of the international festival dedicated to glass art.
Until Sunday 17th, the Islands of the Venetian Lagoon will host 150 initiatives among exhibitions, conferences, seminars, projections, educational activities, and themed dinners but above all burning furnaces.
Numerous works are exhibited by international artists who have focused their attention on glass art. Like the special participation of Robert Wilson, famous theatrical director, designer and visual artist, who for the first time in Italy exhibits at Palazzo Franchetti, in collaboration with the Berengo Foundation and curated by Jean Blanchaert and Noah Khoshbin. Like Vittorio Zecchin who presents the transparent glasses for Caooellin and Venini, curated by Marino Barovier for LE STANZE DEL VETRO. You can also see Qwalala, the work of the American artist Pae White: a 75-meter long wall made of hand-cast glass bricks.
The Foundation Musei Civici of Venice will host several exhibitions at the Glass Museum, including that of Gaetano Pesce, with Five techniques with glass, and Dino Martens, painter and designer, as well as several works by international artists such as Federica Marangoni; Michael Zyw and Sandra Fuchs who exhibit at Carlo Goldoni’s house; Tristiano di Robilant and Domitilla Harding at Palazzo Moncenigo and Maria Grazia Rosin at Ca’ Pesaro, the International Gallery of Modern Art.
For glass enthusiasts and scholars, the Center of Glass Studies of the Institute of Art History allows you to visit the Glass Archives and the specialized library.
These above mentioned are just some of the appointments and exhibitions at The Venice Glass Week.
For those curious who know little about the glass, there are initiatives related to music, such as Reflected Notes at Bru Zane Palazzetto, Rècital of arias and melodies by Gounod, Lalo, Massenet, Pierné and Widor. For poetry, the appointment is at the Casa delle Parole at Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi with a reading of pieces dedicated to glass; there are even initiatives related to the cinema with the projection of Pezzi Sparsi (2016), a documentary film about the glass artist Toni Zuccheri by Marta Pasqualini.
The Venice Glass Week also caters to children with activities for kids organized by Artsystem and Barchetta blu; it winks at the lovers of good cooking with “cicchettate” and themed dinners, as well as at the athletes with a night race “La Bocca del Fuoco“, which includes a night-time trail among the Murano calli lit by candles and burning furnaces.
